2015-07-23

Québec, July 21 2015. –  The minister of Tourism, Dominique Vien, announced a contribution of $218,800 to Les Amis des Jardins de Métis for their project « Les Jardins s’ouvrent sur le Saint-Laurent » (the Gardens open onto the St. Lawrence). This grant comes from the Programme Stratégie maritime – Volet tourisme (SMVT). The total project cost is $656,500.

The project has as its target the development of new viewpoints and accessways to the St. Larwence and the Mitis River to enrich the experience of all those visiting Les Jardins de Métis. In order to do so, the organization will add to its existing property with the purchase of a 19 hectare property to:

  • develop riverine pathways and lookouts with views of the St. Lawrence;
  • the planting of a planted promenade along Route 132;
  • the creation of a sculpture garden;
  • the landscaping of the garden around ERE132 to incorporate signage, native plants and works of contemporary art and sculpture;
  • an eco-pasture featuring “lambmowers” to present to visitors new approaches to sustainable development

“Situated at the frontiers of the regions of the Lower st. Lawrence and the Gaspésie, Les Jardins de Métis have a unique geographic advantage to attract visitors. It is a unique tourism product that is featured in the collection of Signature Experiences. This attraction is already well-established and Les Amis des Jardins de Métis is working to make it even more attractive and to diversify Quebec’s tourism products. Offering unique products and experiences is essential to promote Québec on the world stage,” commented Minister Vien.

“Les Jardins de Métis are one of the most popular tourism attractions of eastern Québec. The addition of tourism infrastructures linked to the river will augment what is on offer, attract more visitors from here and abroad and retain them longer in La Mitis region and neighbouring cities like Rimouski and Matane. This is excellent news for the region. In this way, the recently launched Maritime Strategy will leverage the development and vitality of our regions throughout Québec,” underlined Minister D’Amour.
