PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA, October 3, 2015 — Reford Gardens/Jardins de Métis received a rating of 5 Blooms Silver and a special mention for Sustainable Garden Initiatives the 2015 National Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Kamloops, BC. Reford Gardens/Jardins de Métis participated in the Special Attractions category.

Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.

Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Berta Briggs and Rachelle George-Bernard wrote: “Les Jardins de Metis or Reford Gardens, are becoming a leader in sustainable development by creating awareness of the benefits of plants in our daily life and sharing advances that improve the quality of the landscapes in which we live.  With its botanical collections, the newly built eco-house, heritage buildings, the International Garden Festival and its exceptional site on the Shoreline of the St. Lawrence, Les Jardins de Metis or Reford Gardens, is one of Canada’s leading cultural destinations and is considered one of the ‘great gardens’ of North America.   The creative, innovative and avant-garde projects with regards to sustainable environmental initiatives, sustainable natural and cultural heritage and sustainable gardens confirms why Jardins de Metis was named Canada’s “Garden of the Year” in 2014.”.

Within the actual context of climate changes and environmental concerns, communities involved in the program can be proud of their efforts, which provide real and meaningful environmental solutions and benefit all of society.
