Between memory and renewal, the photographs reveal a nature that does not narrate itself, but simply stands there\u2014silent, attentive, and eternally alive. Exploring the immediate surroundings of the Jardins de M\u00e9tis, Pierre Fauteux observes a nature in perpetual metamorphosis, yet surprisingly true to itself. The project is part of a deliberate dialogue with the work of Robert W. Reford, a pioneer of photography in Canada who documented the landscape of the Lower St. Lawrence 100 years ago. A woman of passion, Elsie Reford transformed the surroundings of the fishing camp she received from her uncle, George Stephen, in 1918, into a haven of beauty that has been open to the public since 1962. Over time, the fishing guides who served as the first gardeners eventually gave way to horticultural specialists.<\/p>\n<p>This passion for the Gardens \u2013 which span 18 hectares, are home to over 3,000 plant species, and are designated a National Historic Site of Canada and a Quebec heritage site \u2013 is shared by Louise Tanguay, who has been photographing them for over 20 years. Garden tools are often considered collectors\u2019 items and many gardeners form attachments to their tools as though they\u2019re old friends. Reford<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Robert W. Reford was one of Canada\u2019s first amateur photographers. He acquired his Kodak No. 1 in 1888, as soon as this first Kodak hit the market. This would be the beginning of his lifetime passion for photography.<\/p>\n<p>In 1926, when Elsie adds a second storey to Estevan Lodge, she sets up a dark room for her husband. Located in the couple\u2019s private quarters, few ever had the chance to visit this room. This multimedia exhibit grants you the privilege of assisting Robert at work in his darkroom.<br \/>\nThis exhibit is complementary to the Elsie through the eyes of\u2026 permanent exhibit, which has been presented in the Estevan Lodge since 2018. In it, we hear Elsie retell personal experiences that were drawn from the writings she left behind discussing everything from her horticultural experiences to summers in M\u00e9tis and her social, political, and philanthropic involvement during her time spent in Montreal throughout the rest of the year. The exhibit was created by Montreal\u2019s Umanium firm with research by historian Karine H\u00e9bert.
