Project description

The project invites visitor to remember the playfulness and beauty of nature and to celebrate the life cycle of the native maple tree.

Les hélicoptères mimics the action of real seed pods with artificial colors and materials in order to call attention to its beauty, form and function. Thousands of colourful samaras are frozen in time in their most animated moment of life to evoke enchantment and nostalgia for visitors. Adults will remember how they used to play with the seeds and show their younger counterparts how it is done. Touch, spin, examine, explore, and remember to play with the real one come autumn. “We hope this will spark interest in the visitors to continue to engage with natural objects in the future.”

DESIGNERS / ANNA THOMAS, CARSON ISENOR

Vancouver (British Columbia) Canada Anna Thomas and Carson Isenor met at the University of British Columbia during their studies in the MLA program. They worked together during the summer of 2017 at Aloe Designs Inc., a landscaping company in Vancouver, where they built projects that Carson had designed. Their shared background in visual arts and sculpture coupled with their ambition of becoming landscape architects revealed their design compatibility. Both are interested in public art and its crossover with landscape architecture, leading them to this competition. Carson works for Enns Gauthier Landscape Architects and Anna is finishing her Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia.
